    The Shanghai Institute of Materials Research (SRIM) originated from the "Material Performance Testing Laboratory" established in 1946 and has grown rapidly with the rise and development of industry in New China. By the 1990s, it had become the core research and development institution for engineering materials technology in China's mechanical industry. At the end of the 20th century, driven by the deepening of the reform of the scientific and technological system, our institute developed into a high-tech enterprise for new materials in Shanghai; Shanghai Engineering Materials Technology Backbone R&D Institution and a fair and authoritative third-party material testing institution.

    Guided by the significant needs of industrial development, we undertake and complete a number of national, Shanghai municipal, and enterprise commissioned new material technology research and development projects every year. Through independent innovation, we have developed a large number of engineering new materials and key technologies for application in the fields of special metal materials, polymers and their composites, engineering ceramic materials, hard alloys and powder metallurgy materials, as well as energy dissipation and vibration reduction materials and technologies, providing important technical support for the improvement of industrial competitiveness and major engineering construction.

    Driven by market demand, we have built multiple mass production lines for new material products, implemented a boutique strategy, and developed nearly a hundred high-tech new material products with independent intellectual property rights, which are widely used in industries such as machinery, automobiles, aerospace, ships, information, construction, and national defense construction. Some high-end products have dominated the domestic market and participated in international market competition.
