Northeast Forestry University is a multidisciplinary and coordinated higher education institution with forestry as its advantage and forestry engineering as its characteristic. It is located in Harbin, the center of China's largest state-owned forest area, with a campus area of 136 hectares and teaching, research, and internship bases such as Maoershan Experimental Forest Farm (Maoershan Forest Park) and Liangshui Experimental Forest Farm (Liangshui National Nature Reserve), with a total area of 33000 hectares.

Historical evolution. The school was founded in July 1952, originally named Northeast Forestry College. It was established on the basis of the Forestry Department of Zhejiang University's College of Agriculture and the Forestry Department of Northeast Agricultural College, and was directly managed by the former Ministry of Forestry of China. In August 1985, it was renamed Northeast Forestry University. In February 2000, it was transferred from the former State Forestry Administration to the direct management of the Ministry of Education. In October 2005, it was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Education to become a key university under the national "211 Project". In November 2010, the Ministry of Education and the former State Forestry Administration signed a cooperation and joint construction agreement. In June 2011, it became a key construction university of the national "Advantageous Discipline Innovation Platform" project. In March 2012, the Ministry of Education signed a cooperation and co construction agreement with the People's Government of Heilongjiang Province. In September 2017, it was approved by the State Council to be listed as a "Double First Class" construction university. In February 2022, selected as a university for the second round of national "Double First Class" construction.
