The Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the "Institute of Physics") was formerly the Institute of Physics of the National Central Academy of Sciences, which was founded in 1928, and the Institute of Physics of the Beiping Academy of Sciences, which was founded in 1929. On the basis of the merger of the two institutes, the Institute of Applied Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was founded in 1950, and was renamed the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1958.

The Institute of Physics is a multidisciplinary and comprehensive research institution primarily focused on fundamental and applied research in physics. The research direction is mainly focused on condensed matter physics, including condensed matter physics, optics, atomic and molecular physics, plasma physics, soft matter and biophysics, theoretical and computational physics, materials science and engineering, etc. Superconductivity, topology, nanotechnology, surfaces, extreme conditions and other disciplines are at the forefront of world technology; Many fields such as magnetism, optics, advanced materials, and clean energy have provided strong support for the development of the national economy. In addition to focusing on fundamental cutting-edge issues and rooting in Zhongguancun for scientific research, the Institute of Physics actively responds to the national science and technology strategic layout by investing in the construction of the Huairou Science City (comprehensive experimental equipment, material genome research platform, and clean energy material testing, diagnosis, and research and development platform) of the Beijing Science and Technology Innovation Center, the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area Science and Technology Innovation Center, and the Yangtze River Delta Physics Research Center. As a member of the "national team" and "national people", with a focus on "national affairs" and shoulder "national responsibilities", the whole institute has united and worked hard, making positive contributions to the development of the national economy and the strengthening of the country through science and technology.

The Institute of Physics currently has 12 laboratories including superconductivity, magnetism, surface physics, photophysics, advanced materials and structural analysis, nanophysics and devices, extreme condition physics, clean energy, condensed matter theory and computation, soft matter and biophysics, solid-state quantum information and computation, and Huairou Research Department; They form the research system of the Institute of Physics together with the International Center for Quantum Structures, the Condensed Matter Science Data Center, the Beijing Spallation Neutron Source Target Station Spectrometer Engineering Center, the Clean Energy Center, the Superconducting Technology Application Center, the Functional Crystal Research and Application Center, the Quantum Computing Research Center, and the Applied Physics Center. The technology department, as well as the public technology platforms of various laboratories and research groups, together form the technical support system of the entire institute. In addition, the Institute of Physics is also the leading unit of the Beijing Regional Center for Large scale Instruments in Material Science and Nanotechnology, the Electron Microscopy Technology Alliance of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a co building unit of the Beijing Institute of Quantum Information Science.
